About the Provisional Program

Each fall, the Office of Admissions welcomes approximately 150-200 first year students as provisionally admitted students. While Undergraduate Academic Services does not play a role in deciding which students are provisionally admitted, we are responsible for overseeing the academic progress of all provisionally admitted first year students at the College of Charleston.*Questions about the provisional admission decision should be directed to an admission counselor in the Office of Admissions at 843.953.5670.*

The College of Charleston’s Provisional Program is designed to assist you in creating a solid foundation on which you can build to reach your academic goals and earn your degree. The program provides clear expectations and recommendations based on a comprehensive review of successful provisional students. The Program provides a collaborative campus-wide support network coordinated by the Office of Undergraduate Academic Services.

Requirements (starting fall 2015):

  • Provisional students are required to complete 24 credits at the College with a 2.0 GPA in the Fall/Spring semesters of the first year. Students are encouraged to enroll in 15-16 credit hours per term and may withdraw from only one course a semester. Provisional students may not enroll in more than 16 credit hours per semester.
  • Provisional students are required to enroll in a First Year Experience (FYE) Seminar or Learning Community in the first semester.
  • Provisional students are required to work with a Peer Academic Coach (PAC) in the fall and spring semesters. The format of this interaction in the spring will depend on each student’s academic performance in the fall.
  • Provisional students are required to meet with an academic advisor at least twice each semester.
  • Provisional students earning a 2.0 and above in the fall semester will have their requirements revised but will be required to participate in a half-day workshop in January followed by at least two one-hour workshops selected from a menu of choices focused on identifying strengths and selecting a major.

  • We recommend that provisional students not work more than 15 hours per week. We further recommend that students seek on-campus employment.
  • We recommend that provisional students attend an early summer orientation. (A special required session is held during each orientation for provisional students and their parents.)
  • We recommend that provisional students complete the English requirement in the first year.
  • We recommend that provisional students live on campus.

Students who are unable to meet the requirements stipulated in the Provisional Learning Contract will need to earn at least 30 credit hours at another institution before returning to the College of Charleston.
